What is art therapy?

Art therapy is a form of support where you use art materials and creative processes to explore feelings, reduce stress and improve wellbeing. It is led by a trained therapist in a safe, confidential setting. You do not need artistic skill.

Do I need to be good at art?

Not at all. The focus is on expression and exploration, not artistic skill. There is no right or wrong way to create.

What does the free 15-minute consultation involve?

It is obligation-free. We discuss your goals, how art therapy works, logistics (including NDIS if relevant), and whether we feel like a good fit. Calls can be by phone or video. It is not a therapy session.

Does NDIS fund art therapy?

In many cases, yes — when sessions support goals in your NDIS plan. See our NDIS page for details, or ask in your free consultation.

Is art therapy covered by Medicare?

Not generally. Options often include NDIS, private health (fund-dependent), or self-funded sessions.

What is the difference between art therapy and counselling?

Art therapy uses creative materials to explore feelings that can be hard to put into words. Counselling relies more on conversation alone. Both can support mental health; the right fit depends on you.

What qualifications should I look for?

Look for a registered art therapist with recognised training (typically a master’s) and professional membership such as ANZACATA.

Is art therapy helpful for trauma or anxiety?

Many people find art therapy helpful for anxiety, trauma and grief because it does not rely on verbal recounting alone. Sessions are paced for safety and choice.

Is there art therapy in Margaret River and the South West?

Yes. Art Therapy Australia offers registered art therapy across Margaret River, Busselton, Bunbury and Augusta by appointment.
